 Security in Consumer Computing

  1. End users (humans) have lots of accounts to access online services
  2. Viruses and phishing attacks cause harm to consumers and can make e-commerce unusable
  3. Virus free computing may never happen
  4. NEED:
    a] Security against credential theft
    b] Single Sign on
    c] No passwords or biometrics
    d] Privacy

Solutions:

  1. We show that using PKI and embedded hardware devices (personal authenticator) a user can perform secure e-commerce without attacks from viruses and/or public computers. No account information is leaked.
  2. We show how the usage of hardware devices based on PCI bus interfaces can check the operating system for rootkits and applications from viral threats.
  3. We show how the use of Virtual Machines can augment security against malware.

Our Approach: Here is a presentation dealing with personal financial transactions and viral attack prevention.
